De Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is beweeglijk en zit vol levenslust, maar laat zich ook graag urenlang aanhalen. Hij is dan ook zachtaardig en gemakkelijk om mee te leven. Hoewel hij goed kan wennen aan het leven in een stad, heeft hij wel lange wandelingen nodig. Hij is niet graag alleen; het liefst gaat hij met zijn baasje mee op stap.

Aanleg voor overgewicht
De Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is een betoverende hond die dagelijks beweging nodig heeft om overgewicht te voorkomen. Na sterilisatie of castratie moet zijn calorie-inname meestal zelfs met 20 tot 30% worden teruggebracht.

Typisch kortschedelig
Een grote, ronde kop, een platte schedel, sterke kaken en een korte stop (overgang van kop naar neus); dit zijn de kenmerken van kortschedelige honden. Door de plaats van hun tanden in de kaak kunnen ze problemen krijgen met kauwen en lopen ze meer risico op gebitsproblemen. Deze kunnen leiden tot verlies van tanden of erger. Tandplak kan infecties veroorzaken en deze infecties kunnen zelfs invloed hebben op de gezondheid van enkele vitale organen, zoals het hart en de lever.

Aandacht voor zijn hart
Aandoeningen aan de hartklep komen regelmatig voor bij Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. In een gevorderd stadium kan een dergelijke aandoening lijden tot hartfalen, waardoor de hond geen inspanning meer kan verdragen.
